Richard Brooks

Clinical Director

Richard qualified from University College Hospital Dental School in 1986. On qualifying Richard spent 5 years in The Royal Army Dental Corps serving in West Berlin, Northern Ireland and Saudia Arabia, during the first Gulf War. He then spent a year at the UK's only postgraduate teaching Institute, the Eastman Dental Hospital, graduating with a Masters degree in Conservative Dentistry in 1992. 

Since leaving the Eastman, Richard has worked in private practice focusing primarily on cosmetic and restorative dentistry as well as family dental care. He keeps up to date with the latest developments in dentistry by attending courses in England, France, Italy and has spent further time in the USA working with some of the world's leading cosmetic dentists.

He has recently completed all 5 levels of the Bioclear Method training program in Tacoma, USA, under the direction of Dr David Clark, the inventor of the technique.

He is very excited and proud to have set the new multi-specialist Tanshire Clinic in Elstead,Surrey, with his wife Fiona McMichen, working with other colleagues at the top of their field including Joanne Freeman.


Joanne Freeman

Specialist in Prosthodontics

Joanne qualified from King's College Dental School in 1983. After a number of surgical and a children dentistry posts at the UK's only postgraduate teaching Institute, the Eastman Dental Hospital, she moved departments to restorative dentistry completing a Masters degree in Conservative dentistry in 1988. Joanne is a registered Specialist Prosthodontist, a founder member of the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentists, and director of Oral Design London.

After her hospital career, Joanne became an in-house dentist for Glaxo, moving sites and starting a new dental department for Glaxo Wellcome UK. She remained with the company for 13 years holding senior management positions and running both the Dental and Occupational Health Departments, as well as continuing to practice clinical dentistry throughout this time.

Joanne moved into private practice in 2002 to further develop her area of expertise - cosmetic and restorative dentistry, as well as really enjoying providing all round family dental care. Joanne's main area of interest is conservative smile makeovers (see gallery), using both modern conservative plastic bonding techniques like advanced level Bioclear as well as porcelain provided by Oral Design London.  She often works very closely with her specialist orthodontic colleague Lindsay Winchester on these cases.  Joanne loves the fact she is in a multi-disciplinary and specialist team environment so she is able to provide the very best outcomes and care for her patients, whatever their needs.


Fiona McMichen | Endodontics
Fiona McMichen

Specialist in Endodontics and Clinical Director

Fiona qualified from University College Hospital Dental School. She completed her vocational training and then worked in Berlin for the American Army in a multi-specialist dental centre. On returning to the UK she worked in general practice before moving to the UK's only postgraduate teaching Institute, the Eastman Dental Hospital, qualifying with a Masters degree in Endodontics in 1996. Fiona is a registered Specialist Endodontist a member of the British Endodontic Society, The European Endodontic Society, a regular guest at the International Academy of Endodontists, a member of the International endodontic community TDO, and a founder member of the post-graduate Langham Endodontic Study Club.

After leaving the Eastman, Fiona set up her endodontic referral practice here in Surrey. She is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the Eastman and has lectured on both the Endodontic  Diploma and Restorative Certificates courses for 20 years. She has also run postgraduate courses at various locations in the UK and more recently here at The Tanshire Clinic.

There have been some fantastic advances recently in the endodontic field that help save teeth.  Greater conservation of tooth structure, aided by advances in material technology, 3D radiographic visualisation and the use of microscopes to magnify and illuminate the field of interest. Fiona continues to be absolutely fascinated by her specialty and regularly attends courses at home and abroad with some of the world's greatest minds in Endodontics and related fields of Science.

Lindsay Winchester

Consultant Orthodontist

Lindsay qualified with honours in Dentistry, Paediatrics and Orthodontics from Guy's Hospital Dental School in 1981. After qualifying she spent several years gaining experience in many areas of surgery including maxillofacial surgery, oral medicine, restorative dentistry, children's dentistry and orthodontics.

Lindsay is Clinical Lead Consultant for Orthodontics at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, and is actively involved in teaching both nationally and internationally. She is an examiner for all three Royal College of Surgeons in Orthodontics.

She has huge experience in Children and Adult Orthodontics, as well as Cleft Lip and Palate, and Snoring and Sleep Apnoea, and we are delighted to have her working with us here at The Tanshire Clinic.


Nick Lewis

Consultant and Specialist in Restorative Dentistry

Nick graduated with Honours in Newcastle in 2001 before commencing General Professional Training in the North-East of England.  After completion of house officer posts and time in general practice he completed his Membership examination at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and then went on to undertake House posts in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at University College Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. He completed his higher specialist training in Restorative Dentistry at The Eastman Dental Hospital in London when he also completed a Masters degree in Conservative Dentistry in 2006.

Nick obtained the intercollegiate specialty fellowship examination in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2008 and was appointed as full time Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at The Eastman in 2009.  Nick was clinical lead in Prosthodontics at The Eastman from 2010-2014.  He was appointed as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at The Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford in 2016 with a sub-specialty interest in maxillofacialnprosthodontics and the Dental management of head and neck cancer patients.  Nick is now predominantly based at The Royal Surrey in his NHS Consultant role and maintains a teaching commitment as a Clinical Lecturer at The Eastman.

Nick is currently the Course Director for the Royal College of Surgeons FGDP diploma in Restorative Dentistry and is also a regional Dental advisor for the Royal College of Surgeons Of Edinburgh. Nick has completed an LLM in Medical Law,was also awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the Faculty of General Practitioners in 2017 (ad eundum).

Nick's clinical interests are centred around fixed and removable prosthodontics including the placement and restoration of dental implants and the oral rehabilitation of patients who have had head and neck cancer treatment. He is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England &Edinburgh, University College London (UCL) and the FGDP.
